Pixalytics Ltd is a family-run Earth observation company based at Plymouth Science Park, specialising in satellite remote sensing. Led by Dr Samantha Lavender, a world-renowned expert with over thirty years of experience, the company processes and visualises satellite data to generate valuable insights about our planet’s surface, oceans, and atmosphere.
The team is often approached by potential collaborators from across the globe regarding involvement in a wide variety of initiatives.
Advancing Earth Observation Technology
Pixalytics’ expertise spans a diverse range of projects, from mapping ocean plastics in collaboration with the United Nations to studying coastal erosion and greenhouse gases. The company is at the forefront of developing international standards for machine learning and artificial intelligence within the geospatial sector.
They recently participated in the Open Geospatial Consortium’s Disaster Pilot 2023 project, working alongside the Manitoba Emergency Management Organisation. Pixalytics developed an Operational Capacity Guide, providing disaster response stakeholders with tools to enhance their use of geospatial data in emergency management.
Innovation in Space Technology
The integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning is transforming geospatial data usage. In 2023, Pixalytics was involved in groundbreaking tests of AI deployment on orbiting satellites, aimed at optimising data transmission to Earth. This technology has since been demonstrated on the European Space Agency’s first CubeSat, marking a significant advancement in space observation capabilities.
“I’ve worked on the Park for over fifteen years, and have found it is the perfect place to develop and grow the business, surrounded by a network of potential companies to work with. Being based at the Park has helped Pixalytics to evolve and thrive throughout its life”
Dr Samantha Lavender, Lead at Pixalytics Ltd.
